Just to share some memories from the good old days...when i was very young, there was one day when pakcik bring me to watch Selangor vs N. Sembilan at Padang Kuala Pilah somewhere in the 80's...Padang Kuala Pilah is the NS home venue that day, just a standard field with limited seats...we can't manage to get seat, but were seated on the field at the back of Selangor goal...just few yards from the post, only separated by a long rope from corner to corner...And there were the legends... Mokhtar Dahari, R. Arumugam, Santokh Singh, Reduan Abdullah and few more names I can't remember...ahh..yes, Alias Syed Mohamad the acrobatic NS goalkeeper...(he saved some grounder ball with some rolling moves, like a pangolin...haha..) ;D The Selangor team with majority of them are national players, looks intimidating...they make their presence felt, they were the real stars of the day...even when the warm-up sessions, they did sychronisedly (is the word valid ?)...it is like watching a show and the crowd were very excited...wohoo...and my best moment came when during the game, the ball bumped towards me and it was the "Spiderman" Arumugam himself came to retrieve it...He came, collect the ball, flash a smile and ruffle my hair....haha... and crowd bersorak and clapped as approval... As a young kid growing up idolising our football heroes, watching those stars in live action is really an unforgettable experience for me... Haha nice. I'm unfortunate that I'm only able to watch Msian football when they are already on the wane. My idols in those days were the Perak players, esp. midfield maestro no 12, Azizol Abu Haniffah (its a disgrace he's involved in the bribing scandal ). I remember 2 incidents regarding him; First, he was facing his own goal in the middle of the field and surrounded by three opponents. He managed to do a 180 without breaking a sweat, leaving the awed opponents in his wake. Secondly, it was a match away against Sabah (saw it on TV) where the stadium at that time is just like Padang Kuala Pilah. Perak is leading (2-0 i think) and Azizol went to take the corner kick on the left near the end of regulation time. Some Sabah fans abused him and throws boxed drinks and stuff towards him. He complained to the referee, and the referee came and tell him just be patient and get on with it since it's near the end of the game. Pissed, he went on to curl the ball directly into the far post. Then he ran along the side of the field clapping his hand while facing the stunned Sabah fans. Those awesome images still remained burned in my mind. Ah, those were the days.... P/S: I think the word you are looking for is in sync.

Azizol Abu Haniffah was a very quiet and a shy person and a very good young boy...I knew him becoz we were working together in Maju Bangun (subs of PKNP Perak) in 1983...he was then 18 years old and I was at my peak as a rugby player playing for Perak...unfortunately he joined the wrong companions and get himself involved with 'bribery' and I was caught by surprised and one of Malaysia most talented players gone with the wind .
After that episode I did not watch malaysian football in stadiums till today except on TV's.Sorry guys for the missing in action for 2 weeks becoz of what happened in my state Perak and also the death of my friend Allahyarham YB.Roslan Shahrom (MP for Bt.Gantang)... AL FATIHAH

Ya I remember Azizol too. Really liked him. Had talent and skill. Too bad. It's people like him who have helped bring M'sian football to where it is today.
Yes, su1409, Perak has been in the news. Really upset about what happened there.

talking abt the good ol' days, huh? well, i don't remember any of the glory days.. honest. i grew up with the ngap sayot era..so i don't really have much to share. but the ngap sayot era (for swak at least) gave us something that are rare nowadays in malaysian football - determination to win and a grand dream to match. those days were filled with hope, dreams and determination..sigh. now.. i am ashamed to say i hardly ever pay any attention to the local league. i wish i could go back to that night long time ago when swak meet sbah at stadium negeri at petra jaya..FA cup i think.. semi final..or was it quarter finals?.. anyways, the atmosphere in the stadium that night was electrifyingly awesome. there were chants and singings..there were unity among fans..wow. the results of the game? a three-day loss of voice! now, i don't think the same atmosphere can be repeated.. whether it in swak or elsewhere. where have our local football gone wrong?

Su1409...Speaking of the late MP Arwah Roslan... did he really went to Gazza before he died....May Allah bless his soul... speaking of Perak rugby... do you know one Mr. Harris..a former MCKK coach and now I think is one of the Perak MSSM rugby referee.. I last met him in 2004 when the school I taught played in the under 15 MILO MSSM rubgy competition in Batu Pahat... If you ever sees him..send my regards to him...I am one of his niece...
Azizol was a great player... In fact I remember the 180 degree turn that he did like what ezzy79 says..he did that in Stadium Merdeka when Selangor played Perak... I was there among the thousand of the red and yellow army in the stadium..even we were awed by the turn and I remeber the Selangor crowd went "Ooohhhh" when he did the turn past Khan Han Meng, Malek Rahman and Jayakanthan...
As for our national team..the last Malaysian team that I can consider strong is the 1993 team..under Ken Worden, the team has Khairul Azman in goal, K. Gunalan in center defence and Jayakanthan in left back, Azizol and Dollah Salleh in midfield and Zainal and Aman Adnan in attack...
The team nearly beat Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in the pre world cup game and beat Macau 10-0 in the old Merdeka Stadium... but in the Sea ?Games in Singapore, they played like new schoolboys as they wanted to save their energy for the Malaysia cup games after that..

rlanzairi...the late Roslan did not went to Gazza and about Harris yes I know him but I've not seen him for quite sometime but I don't agree with you about that 1993 team...it was not that good except Azzizol and keeper Khairul...Zainal was past his best and Azman is only good at running burt skill wise he is off the mark.

I see the point...but at least the 1993 team especially when they played in the Pre Workld Cup Qualifying game at Merdeka Stadium was the last team that performed well, after 1993, we went down the doldrums till now...
One thing I forgot was that the 1993 team had Mubin Mokhtar... His long range blaster was well known at that time and he scored a blasting free kick against the Saudis... he scored another blaster against Macau in the next game... The team was balanced at that time ...Azman Adnan that year was the best Malaysian player in the team...Zainal was playing Libero against Kuwait and Saudi but in both games, he played striker in the last 20 minutes... Dollah Salleh got injured before thye qualifying game and only played against Macau where he scored a goal...If Dollah had played against Kuwait amnd Saudi..we might get a win... The team disbanded in 1994 after the great bribery scandal and until now, we are down in the drain...
The 1996 team that got runners up in the Asean Cup was good but I think the 1993 team is better... the 1996 team lost out of steram in the 1997 Sea Games where they got whacked 4-0 by host Indonesia and knocked out by Laos...

the 1996 team that was runner up Asean cup was coach by Wan Jamak Hassan and he did very well but FAM boot him out after sea games debacle and that was a stupid move by FAM ... Wan Jamak should have given the chance to coach the team for a least 3 years..oh! fAM oh! FAM..when will you ever learn...please don't disturb Rajagopal becoz the u/19 is doing very well at the moment and let him be with this team...if FAM cnnot get Teong Kim than make Azraai Kor the national coach and let see what he can do.

Back to the old days when we had 2 national teams,A/B teams and super mokh started his career with the B team b4 promoted to the A team in 1973...FAM send teh A team to all major tournaments and the B squad to the small tourneys and those players from the B team does well will be promoted to the A team and likewise....so all the players must be at their toes and gives 150percent on the pitch and this augurs well to our national team then...why not implement this method again,I'm sure it will be succesfull.

Everybody from yesteryears and current years talked about Mokhtar Dahari the striker but everyone seems to forget about one striker who played for Perak and Penang in the late 60's and 70's who single handedly send Malaysia to our first Olympics in Munich 1972...he is none other than SYED AHMAD the most gifted and talented striker Malaysia ever produced.
In the 1971 pre-olympics,we beat S.korea, japan and the philipines to book that precious place to the Olympics...he scored the winning goals vs korea and japan and was given a heroes welcome by the media and fans but he was dropped from the squad becoz of discipline and that was one of the biggest silly mistake ever made by the FAM...almost all the top stars had disciplinary records such as maradona, georgi best, cantona but selectors never dropped them becoz they are diamonds...and m'sian selectors had the guts to dropped this extra ordinary player...but he came back to wear national colours in the merdeka tournament and sea games in 1973 and in the 1974 Asian games in Teheran he was called "Johan Cruff" of asia by the Israel media after Israel (Asia top team at that time) beat us 7-3 but we played superb football regardless of the scoreline and we went on to clinched the bronze medal beating N.kOREA 2-1...and last year he was the asst.coach for one of the premier league team....I still feel sad and depressed that he was not given the chance to shine at the Olympics 72 after what he had done to the country...yes discipline is an important factor but this guy is so special and FAM should have forgive him...but the media said nothing about discipline, they said syed was dropped becoz of injury but words spread out that discipline was the factor and till now I will never forget this tragic story....to Syed Ahmad ,you'll forever be my hero.
