It was a warm December evening for this 3rd round tie as we entertained Forest at the Lane. It was like the good old days with free entry for season ticketholders although the problems with teamsheets is still a problem. Just before kick off they appeared so the teams are as printed. I sat behind the directors box which included Arnasen, Jol Hughton and Segers. I am glad I sit in the East stand as the leg room is better than where we sat and even that is not much.
Spurs lined up withLee and Mills at the back with Ifil on the right and Wright on the left. O'Hara and Maghoma in centre midfield with Davis instead of Heller on the right and Daniels on the left flank with Barcham
and Dawkins up front.Forest kicked off attacking the Park Lane and had the first effort when Hughes fired over in the 3rd minute as the visitors pushed for a quick goal. It took a little while before the home side got going and the midfield began to dominate and stretched the play bringing the wide players into it. Pat Holland likes to use the wings and with Daniels and Davis there is a lot pace and a lot of running for them. Most of the good work was down the left were Daniels and Wright have a good understanding whereas Davis is fairly new to the side and Ifil away with the reserves did not gel. Barcham and Dawkins were well marshalled by Hanbury and Fernandez, who was Forest's best player on the night, but still caused trouble in the final third. Mills and Lee did a similar job at the other end where Forecast had less work to do than Gamble without a shot to save. Mills hit the bar from a O'Hara free kick may have got a touch from Barcham on it's way to the far post. Davis and Maghoma had weak shots on target which were easy for Gamble and O'Hara and Daniels went close. Just before the break Davis's cross shot was parried by the keeper and Daniels follow-up was blocked.
The spurs started the second half as they finished the first, on the attack with Barcham moving more to the left dragging Hanbury with him. Thyer came on for Dawkins as spurs pressed. Barcham slipped Hanbury but shot into the side netting. Chances also fell to O'Hara and Ifil after runs into the centre. Barcham again got free and played a lovely ball for Thyer to run onto but a last ditch tackle by Blair as he swung is boot cleared the danger. Daniels had a header on the six yard line when Mills headed O'Haras freekick back across the goal, but it was easily held by Gamble. Barcham got down the left and cut the ball back to Daniels who managed to hit the bar with only the keeper to beat. In the middle of all this Mills and Ifil collided as they went for a long clearance from Forest and both had to have treatment before continuing. Heller was introduced after Davis has taken a knock to add some more pace down the right. Barcham had another effort saved on the line by Gamble as it was almost all one way traffic. As the ninety minutes approached Forest broke down to the spurs area and pushed players forward before Ifil won the ball in the left corner. He passed to Thyer near the centre circle as he came off his marker, turning he carried the ball deep into the Forest half before playing it into Barcham's path as he ran between two defenders and hit it low passed Gamble. The crowd, including Jol, was on it's feet as there was no time for Forest to come back. A very good goal and one worthy to win any match.
All the players played well and had be better of the game over the 90 minutes with Tommy Forecast only having to make a couple of tricky saves in the whole game. We will play either Liverpool or Wealdstone, who play in a fortnight, away in the next round which is in January for a place in the last eight.
