After several years in darkness now we are back to where we should be...a respected team in Asia and the world like we use to be...
In the ongoing Asia cup we held mighty Koreans 1-1,thrash Bangla 7-1 and whip the strong Japanese team 4-1 to book our place in the semis...wow!what a great day for Malaysian hockey.. ..yeah!new officios and new brand of hockey...Tengku Abdullah from soccer to hockey and an unknown coach in Tan Ben Hai who was not a regular during his playing days for Malaysia suddenly transformed our hockey image.
Hopefully this will be the starting points for greater heights and let us malaysians pray that our team can upset Sohail Abbas and his Pakistan army in the semis thus qualify for the final...remember guys..if we capture the Asia cup we will automatically go to the world cup in India...MALAYSIA BOLEH!

Looking back years ago...way back 1975 in kuala lumpur where the world cup were held... famous names like fook loke, shanmuganathan, mahendran, khairuddin zainal, ramakrishnan, balasingam, len oliveiro etc.etc were playing favourites Holland at the Kilat field at 8.00am (heavy downfall postponed the game previous day)...yourstruly were in school at the time and it was during our 'makan time' when we heard in the schools radio that skipper sri shanmuganathan scored in the final minutes to put malaysia 2-1 up and then the final whistle blow and we created history...entering a world cup semi finals...wow! what a great moment and we were leading India during the semis but luck was not on our side when scored late goals to beat us..but history has already being made...can we repeat these feat again..YES and NO...it all depends on the players semangat and keyakinan diri.

Cheers for our hockey boys eventhough they lost 2-4 to a strong and experience Pakistan team...we fought hard but in the end experience wins the tie...Pakistan scored their 3rd n 4th goals when Malaysia were busy attacking for the equaliser but our boys never gave up and scored a wonderful 2nd goal at the final whistle...unlike previous years when we were trailing by 4 or 3 goals,we will surrender but not now..we fought until the end...bravo to our hockey boys who will gain lots of experience and will become a much better team in future cos most of this players are young...Tan Ben Hai and Nor Saiful Zaini showed to the MHF that we don't need outside help...our local coaches can do a much better job.

Our football team can learn a thing or two from the hockey boys...play your hearts out,do not respect the opponents too much and never say die attitude...Nicol David (squash),Chong Wei(badminton),Azizul Hasni(cycling)and our bowling team are good examples of never say die attitude...so come on you soccer guys, bring back the good old days.

I remembered Nor Saiful Zaini, didn't he play into his 30's? The 1975 World Cup was fondly remembered by many, one of our audit partners used to tell us that he and his other colleagues (they were fresh joinees then) skipped work to watch the QF, and guess what happened...as they celebrated the win, they were pictured by newspapers reporters and the picture made it to the sports pages the next day!
Wahahaha, luckily, the bosses at that time didn't mind at all.

I played under Saiful before. When he hang up his stick, being a loyal LLN/Kilat/TNB player/employee, he was appointed as sports director of UNITEN, so obviously the first sport he look after is the hockey team. Whenever he raise his stick, we jump (you don't wanna be on the receiving end of one of the best hitters in the world, you know). Hockey usually (or used to, I haven't been in the scene for sometime) have a pretty organized structure. I notice a lot of hockey player are under scholarship in college/university and ends their career to be a professional or something. Nor Saiful and Minarwan, for instance, took up sports science in UM, Brian Jayhan became a doctor, the Raj brothers went to colleges, Jiwa Mohan is an engineer in Australia. I guess because of the Semi-Pro status they realise its just for passion and challenging themselves, not for earning a living.

Our junior hockey boys held their heads high when they manage to hold the powerful spanish team 3-3 and with a little bit of luck we would have beaten them and qualify for the 2nd round ...but we should be proud of this young boys who were never given a chance before the tournament but they proved the critics wrong...malaysia will be the team to watch in the next 5 to 6 years becoz we have so many talented young players in the senior and junior squad.
