Jenas named as Tottenham's new vice-captain
David Hytner The Guardian, Tuesday August 5 2008
Article history
Jermaine Jenas has been appointed as Tottenham Hotspur's vice-captain for the new season and he will lead the team in the absence of Ledley King, the injury-prone central defender who retains his position as club captain.
Juande Ramos gave the armband to Robbie Keane last season when King was unavailable - he made only 10 appearances in all competitions because of a knee problem - but now that the striker has departed for Liverpool the manager has had to find another deputy.
He considered the merits of Jonathan Woodgate, the central defender who has impressed on and off the field since his £8m arrival from Middlesbrough in January, but he has opted for Jenas, who he felt was the club's most outstanding performer under him last season.
Jenas, who was recently given a one-year contract extension to 2013 and a pay rise, has been slated to play a prominent role together with Luka Modric, the £16.5m signing from Dinamo Zagreb, in Ramos's 4-3-3 formation, which will ask the midfielders behind a lone striker to be flexible in their positioning.
Ramos, who has further strengthened his creative options with the captures of Giovani dos Santos and David Bentley, also envisages a place for Andrei Arshavin, the Zenit St Petersburg playmaker.
Arshavin, who starred for Russia at Euro 2008, is so keen to move to the Premier League that he has turned down an improved contract at Zenit and is prepared to accept a lower wage to complete a proposed switch to White Hart Lane.
The sticking point has been Zenit's refusal to sell at the price Spurs have offered. A Zenit official, Alexei Blinov, said yesterday: "Tottenham offered us about €20m (£16m) but from the beginning we said we would negotiate only offers of €25m or more."
Zenit have been bankrolled into a force in the Russian game by Alexander Dukov, their millionaire president, and, as they prepare to enter the Champions League group phase after their title triumph last time out, he has been firm in his resolution.
Tottenham's negotiators have grown frustrated in their attempts to get an answer from him and their offers have fallen on deaf ears.
Ramos hopes the stalemate will be broken today when Arshavin's agent, Dennis Lachter, talks with Dukov in Madrid. Lachter intends to get a price for him from Dukov which he can then present to the north London club.
